TikTok formally sued the US government on Tuesday in an attempt to stop enforcement of a bill passed in April, arguing that the bill, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, violates constitutional protections of free speech.

In the lawsuit, TikTok alleged that, for the first time in history, Congress enacted a law that imposes a permanent and nationwide ban on a single and designated speech platform, and prohibits every American from participating in the platform, which has over 1 billion users worldwide.
